Oil Changes: Why You Need One

What is an Oil Change?

An oil change is when a technician removes the oil from your vehicle and replaces it with new oil. The oil in your car is a lubricant as all the parts move rapidly to ensure that your vehicle does not overheat or seize up.

Why do you need to change it?

As time passes, the fast moving parts of your car break down the oil, causing it to lose some of it’s lubricating properties. This causes it to not be as effective at keeping things moving smoothly. So, it’s important to change it our at regular intervals to make sure things stay lubricated!

What happens if I don’t?

Well, if you don’t ensure the oil can keep lubricating the rapidly moving parts of your car, it causes your car to run less efficiently, which at best is going to lower your fuel efficiency. If you continue to drive your car past when it’s due for an oil change you risk overheating and seizing up, which can ultimately ruin your engine.

How often do I need one?

There’s a lot of factors that go into how often you need one, ranging from how you drive, how much you drive, to if you drive on the highway a lot. Most modern cars have an indicator, letting you know when a service is due. A good rule generally is 6 months or 5,000 miles, whatever comes first.
